1.Introduction
In the early hours of February 24th, a press conference was held in Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, to report on the “2·23” fire accident in the Yuhuatai District. As of 24:00 on the 23rd, the accident had resulted in 15 deaths, with 44 people undergoing treatment in hospitals, including 1 in critical condition, 1 in serious condition, and 42 with minor injuries. According to the head of the Nanjing Fire Rescue Brigade, preliminary analysis indicated that the fire originated from the parking area for electric bicycles on the ground floor of six buildings, and the specific cause is under further investigation.
In recent years, electric bicycles have gradually become the preferred choice for short-distance travel among ordinary people due to their convenience in travel, easy parking, low purchase and ownership costs, significant energy savings, and fast riding speeds. With the advantages of high energy density and long cycle life, lithium batteries have rapidly become the power source for most electric bicycles. However, improper use of lithium batteries can lead to fire and explosion accidents during use. Once a fire occurs, it can quickly ignite the entire vehicle and surrounding combustibles, accompanied by explosions, high-temperature smoke and toxic fumes, causing widespread concern in society about the safety issues of lithium battery use.
This article will share tips on selecting and using lithium batteries for electric bicycles.
2.Selection of Lithium Batteries for Electric Bicycles
Consumers can consider the following five aspects when purchasing lithium batteries for electric bicycles:
(1) It is recommended to choose well-known brands with good reputation. According to incomplete statistics, there are currently more than 2,000 manufacturers engaged in the production and sales of electric bicycles in China, with varying quality of battery cells and battery controllers. Major brand manufacturers have stronger R&D capabilities, better quality control, more comprehensive product certifications, and better after-sales services.
(2) Pay attention to whether the product labeling is complete. The product label should indicate the manufacturer’s name, specifications, model, nominal voltage, manufacturing date (or production batch), battery rated capacity, etc. The battery model should match the electric bicycle, and it is recommended to purchase lithium battery products produced within six months to avoid battery self-discharge.
(3) Check the appearance of the battery. Check whether the battery casing is securely sealed and whether there are any signs of damage or wear on the wiring harness. A securely sealed battery casing can prevent damage to the battery cells caused by bumps during use and avoid dangerous situations such as water ingress and battery damage during use.
(4) Do not purchase modified batteries. Modified batteries may have inconsistent battery cell specifications and internal circuit specifications, which can easily lead to abnormal capacity degradation, causing dangerous phenomena such as overcharging, overdischarging, and overheating inside the battery; the internal wiring may not meet specifications, leading to internal battery overloads.
(5) Choose a regular purchase channel. When purchasing lithium batteries, choose stores with sales qualifications or channels authorized by manufacturers online, and understand the “three guarantees” period and local after-sales service outlets of the products to facilitate later maintenance;
3.Use of Lithium Batteries for Electric Bicycles
(1) Avoid the Four Avoids: Avoid charging electric bicycle lithium batteries for long periods in high-temperature or hot environments; avoid continuing to use the vehicle after it has been discharged, especially when the cruising performance is reduced; avoid placing electric bicycles outdoors in rainy conditions or charging the batteries; avoid immediately recharging after deep discharge.
(2) Two Do Nots: Do not bring electric bicycle lithium batteries into public enclosed places such as buses and elevators; do not use chargers that do not match the battery voltage for charging.
(3) Promptly check for water immersion: If electric bicycle lithium batteries are soaked or immersed in water, they should be promptly taken to the after-sales service point for inspection to avoid safety hazards caused by water ingress and short circuits.
(4) Regular maintenance: Electric bicycles should undergo regular maintenance. If abnormal battery degradation, battery bulging, leakage, external damage, or wiring damage and aging are found, they should be replaced and repaired promptly.
